A Bobo disc mask structured by radial order and disrupted by a dominant vertical ridge and projecting beak-like form.
Description
A disc mask of forward projection, attributed to the Bobo.
The form is organised as a circular field articulated through concentric registers of triangular relief radiating from a central axis. This establishes a disciplined geometric order across the surface.
That order is interrupted by a pronounced vertical ridge rising through the upper field, paired with a forward-projecting beak-like element and a faceted mouth emerging from the centre. These elements impose a strong directional force, breaking the symmetry of the disc and introducing depth and tension into the composition.
Circular eyes set within incised rings are present but visually subordinated to the central structure, reinforcing the dominance of the vertical axis over lateral balance.
Pigment is retained across both raised and recessed areas, with abrasion at exposed points consistent with handling. The contrast between lightened relief and darker ground preserves the clarity of the carved structure.
Context
Within Bobo tradition, disc masks function in ceremonial performance where radial organisation ensures legibility in motion. In examples such as this, the introduction of a dominant vertical projection transforms the planar system into a more dynamic, spatially active form.
