Bobo “Sun / Nocturnal Bird” Mask
Burkina Faso
A Bobo mask of radial precision, disrupted by a forceful central projection that punctures the planar field.
Description
A mask of circular, planar construction, attributed to the Bobo people of Burkina Faso.
The form is organised as a disciplined disc, its surface fully articulated through concentric registers of sharply cut triangular relief radiating outward from a central axis, establishing a controlled visual rhythm across the entire field.
At the centre, projecting elements define the mask’s character: a forward-thrust tubular mouth, a vertical median ridge, and a curved beak-like extension arcing across the face. These elements assert themselves decisively against the planar surface, creating a pronounced tension between flat geometry and sculptural projection. Circular eyes set within incised rings anchor the composition laterally.
Pigment is retained across both raised and recessed zones, with variation at exposed edges consistent with handling. The contrast between darkened ground and lighter carved planes reinforces the clarity of the relief structure.
Context
Bobo masks of this type operate within ceremonial performance where legibility at distance is essential. Radial organisation and concentrated central projection allow the form to register immediately in motion. Works combining rigorous geometric control with surface of this integrity remain rare.
