An Ewe portrait mask in which continuous incision replaces modelling, extending from the face into a fully carved chain terminating in a bird head.

Description

An Ewe portrait mask of unified form, entirely defined through surface incision.

The face is constructed as a compact oval volume, but its modelling is largely subsumed by a dense system of directional cuts. These incisions follow and organise the underlying structure, creating the eyes, nose, and mouth as part of a continuous field rather than as independent forms. Narrow, closed eyes sit beneath lightly defined brows; a straight nose descends into a small, closed mouth, all integrated within the carved surface.

Above, the coiffure is separated as a distinct register of vertical incision, clearly demarcating the hair from the facial field while maintaining continuity of technique.

From the chin, a fully carved chain descends in linked loops, each element cut from the same block. This extension continues the logic of the mask into space, maintaining structural and visual continuity. It resolves in a carved bird head, which completes the downward progression without breaking the unity of the form.

Surface and structure are intact, with stable patina and light wear at raised areas consistent with handling.

Context

Within Ewe carving, incision operates as a primary means of defining form. In works such as this, surface and structure are inseparable, with patterning not applied but constitutive of the object itself. The extension into a carved chain carries this logic beyond the face, producing a continuous sculptural system.
