Description
A Safavid jug with a broad, expanding lower body rising into a sharply flaring neck, the transition contained by a compressed band at the shoulder. The rim opens outward on an angled axis, introducing a measured asymmetry that activates the upper profile without destabilising the form.
A curved handle extends from the shoulder to the rim, following the contour of the vessel and remaining closely integrated. Its attachment is absorbed into the surface, allowing the engraved field to remain continuous.
The ornament is organised in horizontal registers. Dense vegetal engraving occupies the main body, while the neck is structured through narrower, more ordered bands. These zones follow the geometry of the vessel, tightening at points of transition and opening across broader surfaces.
The tinned copper retains a stable patina with soft tonal variation. Engraved details remain crisp and legible, the surface holding both depth and clarity.
Context
Safavid metalwork is defined by the alignment of ornament with structure. Engraving is contained within bands that correspond to shifts in volume, reinforcing the vessel’s geometry rather than obscuring it.
Here, the asymmetrical flare of the rim introduces a controlled deviation within an otherwise disciplined system. The balance between variation and order is maintained throughout.
