Description
A Safavid jug of conical lower body rising into a cylindrical neck and terminating in a flared, scalloped rim. The transition between volumes is continuous, the profile tightening at the neck before opening outward at the lip.
A curved handle extends from the shoulder to the rim, following the contour of the vessel and remaining closely integrated with the overall form. Its attachment does not interrupt the engraved surface, maintaining continuity across the body.
The surface is organised through horizontal registers of engraving. Dense vegetal fields occupy the broader lower section, while narrower bands articulate the upper zones with more restrained patterning. Each register follows the geometry of the form, establishing a clear relation between ornament and volume.
The tinned copper retains a stable, softly reflective surface. Engraved lines remain sharply defined, with tonal variation across the metal contributing to the legibility of the decoration.
Context
Safavid metalwork is characterised by the alignment of surface and structure. Engraved ornament is not applied independently but organised in accordance with the vessel’s form, moving in bands that reinforce its geometry.
This example maintains that clarity. The alternation between dense and open registers establishes rhythm without disrupting the coherence of the whole.
