A Senufo Kpelie mask of pronounced vertical dominance, where a heavy facial plane is carried by a reduced supporting figure.
Description
A Kpelie-type face mask with integrated figural support, attributed to the Senufo.
The face is formed as a broad, frontal plane with rounded edges, structured around a deeply projecting central ridge that establishes the primary vertical axis. Narrow slit apertures define the eyes, set within a surface organised by horizontal bands and fine incised registers. A continuous zigzag border frames the perimeter, reinforcing the containment of the form.
Across the upper register, a horizontal band intersects the central axis, above which shallow arched motifs lead to a small crest, maintaining the vertical progression.
Below, a projecting cylindrical mouth extends outward, carved with individually defined teeth. Beneath the mask, a standing figure supports the structure, its scale reduced and posture contained, emphasising the dominance of the facial mass above. Two vertical struts flank the figure, binding mask and base into a single, rigid system.
The surface is densely worked with layered pigment, producing a mottled field across the plane. Wear is consistent at exposed areas.
Context
Among the Senufo, Kpelie masks are defined by clarity of form, axial organisation, and controlled surface articulation. In examples such as this, the integration of a supporting figure establishes a hierarchical relationship between mass and structure, extending the mask into a unified sculptural system.
