Description

A monumental plank mask of axial construction, attributed to the Mossi.

The composition rises through a clearly articulated sequence along a central spine. At the base, an ovoid mask presents a compact facial form — circular eyes set within concentric rings and a central ridge dividing the face. From this, a narrow shaft ascends, incised along its length and punctuated by angular lateral projections that introduce rhythmic intervals within the vertical progression.

Midway, a circular element intersected by a cross-form motif acts as a structural hinge, transitioning the composition into a triangular platform above.

A standing female figure surmounts the structure, rendered with elongated proportions and attenuated limbs. Frontal and composed, she resolves the ascending sequence, completing the vertical system.

Pigment is retained in defined zones, with abrasion at exposed points revealing the underlying wood. The contrast between darker ground and lighter planes maintains the clarity of the carved structure across the full height of the piece.

Context

Within Mossi tradition, plank masks function in ceremonial performance where vertical extension and layered construction establish visual authority. In examples such as this, the integration of mask base, geometric registers, and figural superstructure produces a fully articulated vertical system — a level of compositional control rarely sustained at this scale.
