A compact Igbo mask of dense, layered relief, defined by a fully worked surface and a vertically structured crest.
Description
A mask of compressed form and dense relief carving, attributed to the Igbo.
The face is entirely covered by an uninterrupted field of geometric incision, structured around a dominant horizontal brow register dividing upper and lower planes. Narrow slit eyes are set beneath, compressed within the lower field.
The surface is organised through concentric circular motifs, crosshatched panels, and raised linear ridges, creating a continuous patterned ground of varied depth. At the crest, lobed tear-drop forms emerge in pronounced relief, stacking vertically and reinforcing the upward axis while maintaining the compact mass of the composition.
Pigment is partially retained across the surface, with abrasion at exposed high points revealing the underlying wood, while darker tones remain embedded within recessed zones, preserving the clarity of the carved structure.
Context
Within Igbo masquerade traditions, masks of this type function within performative cycles where graphic clarity and total surface organisation carry the visual weight. Naturalistic modelling is deliberately set aside in favour of density and pattern.
