Ashanti — Ghana
A comb structured through symmetry and planar control, integrating figure and function within a single ordered field.
Description
The composition is organised along a strict vertical axis. A standing female figure rises from a rectangular body, her head contained within a balanced geometric framework. The facial features are reduced and frontal, held in symmetry and restraint.
The upper structure is defined by shallow, controlled carving. Flanking elements and incised motifs establish a measured rhythm across the surface, while preserving the dominance of the planar field. The figure remains integrated within this system rather than projecting from it.
Below, the teeth descend in a regular, uninterrupted sequence, completing the object with precision. Their even spacing reinforces the overall order of the composition.
Figure, pattern, and function are fully unified. No element operates independently; each contributes to a coherent structural whole.
The surface carries a consistent patina, with subtle variation along raised elements and light wear consistent with handling.
Context
Within Ashanti carving, objects of personal use are governed by proportion, symmetry, and clarity of organisation. Surface articulation reflects systems of order and presentation rather than individual expression.
In this example, symmetry acts as the primary structuring principle. The figure is contained within a disciplined framework, and the surface is resolved through controlled incision rather than excess detail.
