Makonde — Tanzania
A vertical comb resolved as a unified sculptural form, integrating figure and function within a single continuous structure.
Description
The comb is organised along a strict vertical axis, terminating below in a field of evenly spaced teeth cut with precision and regularity. Above, a female figure emerges from the shaft, her presence contained within the structure rather than applied to it.
The transition from handle to figure remains continuous. The body retains its planar integrity, while the head projects forward in controlled, shallow relief. A broad, bifurcated headdress frames the head, extending laterally without disrupting the vertical alignment.
Surface treatment is restrained and deliberate. Shallow incised motifs articulate the shaft in measured patterns, while the face and headdress are more fully modelled, introducing a controlled contrast between planar surface and sculptural projection. The distinction remains structural, maintaining clarity across the object.
Carved in dense ebony, the material supports fine incision and crisp edge definition. The surface carries a deep, consistent patina, with soft variation along raised elements.
A strand of red and blue glass beads is present at the neck, likely a later addition.
Context
Within Makonde carving, utilitarian objects are often brought into alignment with sculptural practice. Combs of this type extend beyond function, operating as markers of identity and status.
The transformation is achieved through structure rather than ornament. Functional elements are retained, but subordinated to proportion, continuity, and surface control. The clarity of the object depends on the balance between use and form.
