Certificate of Authenticity
Safavid — Iran
Description
A Safavid bowl defined by a continuous band of calligraphy encircling the body. The inscription is set within a bordered register of vegetal engraving, forming a structured field that runs uninterrupted around the vessel.
The profile rises from a narrow foot into a broad, open rim, the widening form providing a stable ground for the calligraphic band. The inscription remains consistent in scale and spacing, maintaining continuity across the curvature of the surface.
Flanking registers of dense vegetal ornament frame the script above and below, reinforcing its position within the overall structure. The engraved lines are precise and evenly distributed, allowing the script and ornament to remain distinct yet integrated.
The tinned copper surface retains a stable, softly reflective quality, with tonal variation supporting the clarity of the engraving.
Context
In Safavid metalwork, inscription functions as a primary organising element. Calligraphy is integrated into the surface through defined registers, aligned with the vessel’s form and supported by surrounding ornament.
The relationship between script and geometry is central: the band follows the contour of the bowl, establishing continuity while maintaining legibility.
