Bronze Figure Ensemble
Burkina Faso
A grouped ensemble of eleven standing bronze figures constructed along elongated vertical axes, the composition organised through alternating intervals of height and gesture.
Description
The figures are articulated through attenuated limbs and reduced torsos, each differentiated by a distinct implement or attribute: a figure striking a hand-held drum; a figure raising a curved horn to the mouth; a balafon player with both arms raised bearing mallets; a figure bearing a rectangular basket balanced on the head; two staff-bearers, one capped and one broad-hatted; two figures each bearing a vessel on the head, each incorporating a smaller subsidiary figure attached to the body; a figure carrying a yoke across the shoulders with a suspended vessel; a figure holding a vessel in each extended hand; and a standing figure with a circular mask-like face above a densely textured body. Each figure maintains frontal stability while introducing directional variation through asymmetrical arm extension and carried implements across the group.
Surface is compact and stable. Oxidation is retained across projecting elements and recessed intervals.
