Benin Mask
Nigeria
A compact Edo mask of strong frontal symmetry, distinguished by a densely worked domed coiffure encircled by a ring of relief heads.
Description
A carved wooden mask of the Edo, frontal and vertically structured.
The face is elongated and symmetrical, with large, rounded eyes set beneath defined lids, a straight nasal ridge, and a small, closed mouth. The forehead bears three vertical scarification marks.
The coiffure rises in a high domed form, worked in tight crosshatched grid patterning, encircled at the upper edge by a continuous ring of small heads in high relief, forming a pronounced perimeter.
A broad collar frames the lower face, carved in dense interlaced bands forming a braided structure; the outer edge is defined by a continuous raised border. Lateral elements at the ears are worked in spiral relief.
The surface carries a red-toned patina, even across the face, with slight softening at raised planes consistent with handling.
Context
Within the Benin Kingdom, carving was organised through court guilds under the authority of the Oba. Works of this type reflect a codified visual language associated with rank and representation.
