A Luba mask defined by a continuous beaded surface, structured around dominant eye fields and interrupted by a projecting mouth and fibre extension.

Description

A beaded mask of rounded, volumetric form, attributed to the Luba.

The surface is entirely encased in finely worked beadwork, organised in tightly controlled curvilinear fields that follow and subsume the underlying facial structure. Concentric zones radiate from the eyes, while bands of colour articulate the nose and cheeks, forming a continuous, unified surface of colour and texture.

The eyes act as primary anchors within this system: cowrie shells are set in circular formations around each aperture, establishing two dominant focal fields within the composition. At the forehead, a lizard motif emerges in relief, integrated within the beadwork as a contained lateral element.

Below, the continuity of the surface is broken by an open mouth revealing carved teeth and a projecting tongue, introducing a single, pronounced interruption within the otherwise continuous skin.

A dense fibre fringe extends from the lower edge, forming a secondary field that expands the mask downward into a curtain-like presence.

Beadwork, shells, and fibre remain intact and stable, with minor wear at exposed points consistent with age and use. Colour remains strong and legible across the surface.

Context

Within Luba tradition, masks are associated with ceremonial performance and the articulation of status, identity, and lineage. In examples such as this, material operates as structure: beadwork, shells, and fibre define the visual system, not as ornament but as the primary means of form.

Examples retaining this level of surface coherence, with integrated iconographic detail and preserved materials, remain uncommon.
