A circular Luba mask of radial construction, defined by segmented brass inlay and a compact, frontal composition.
Description
A circular mask of segmented construction, attributed to the Luba.
The face is organised along a strong vertical axis: a projecting nose divides the composition, with cylindrical eye elements set symmetrically to either side, each pierced by a horizontal slit. The mouth projects forward below, carved in stepped relief.
The surface is structured in four radiating fields, each inset with hammered sheet brass panels bordered by triangular and lozenge-shaped inlay. The brass is worked in low relief with repeating geometric motifs, set against a darkened wood ground, creating a pronounced material contrast.
The perimeter is contained by a continuous rim, reinforcing the circular format and maintaining a compact, frontal presence. Patina is deep and even across the wood, while the brass elements show softening and matte wear consistent with handling.
Context
Within Luba practice, masks of this type are associated with initiation contexts and controlled ceremonial use.
