Golf Player Figure

A standing figure constructed along a rotational axis, the mass organised through a turning torso and a club held horizontally behind the head, weight-bearing through the forward leg into an integral base.
Description
Carved in teak, the figure is shown at the completion of a golf swing. Weight is borne through the forward leg; the rear leg is bent at the knee. The torso turns through the waist into the shoulders, both arms raised, the hands gripping the club, which extends horizontally behind the head. The head has simian features beneath a flat-brimmed cap, with inlaid dark glass eyes. The arms and upper body are worked with dense directional incision; the torso, belt and trousers are modelled in smoother planes. The feet are integrated into a rounded base.
Surface is compact and stable. Patina is even across the teak, with tonal variation in the grain and exposure at projecting elements.
Context
Figures of this type belong to twentieth-century Indonesian carving, in which contemporary subjects are rendered through established carving techniques.
