Máscara Baga Nimba

Baga Nimba Shoulder Mask

A shoulder mask organised through an elongated vertical structure, the form contained within a narrow architectural volume articulated by projecting lateral extensions and a compressed upper register.

Incised geometric pattern extends across the surface in continuous repetition, while abrasion and exposure remain concentrated at projecting edges and areas of handling. The relationship between elongated support elements and compressed upper volume establishes the structural balance characteristic of Baga ceremonial sculpture.

From the Felice Maffei Collection.
Collected in Guinea, 1984.

Tambor

Baga Ceremonial Drum

A ceremonial drum constructed through a vertical openwork support formed by interconnected figural elements beneath a contained cylindrical drum chamber.

The structural framework remains visible from all sides, with carved figures integrated directly into the supporting volume rather than applied ornamentally. Surface exposure is concentrated at projecting elements and perimeter edges, while recessed zones retain darker deposits and handling evidence.

From the Felice Maffei Collection.
Collected in Guinea, 1984.

Estatua de la maternidad

Luluwa Maternity Figure

A maternity figure organised through a frontal vertical axis, the elongated proportions contained within a narrow standing volume articulated by incised surface patterning and compressed anatomical transitions.

Scarification extends across the torso and limbs in controlled linear succession, while exposure remains concentrated at projecting areas and points of repeated handling. The contained stance and continuous frontal orientation establish the structural clarity characteristic of Luluwa figural sculpture.

From the Felice Maffei Collection.
Collected in Democratic Republic of Congo, 1984.
